Vice-Chancellor meets Jayalalithaa

The Vice-Chancellor of Tirunelveli Anna University S Kaliappan, who was allegedly attacked by DMK MLA Maalai Raja on Sunday met All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader Ms J Jayalalithaa.Mr. Kaliappan along with his wife met Ms Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden residence here, leading to ripples in DMK circle and the state government. When the media asked about the meeting Mr. Kaliappan said it was just a courtesy call. Contrary to what Vice Chancellors of government universities do by always showing their loyalty to the ruling party, Mr. Kaliappan calling on the Opposition leader showed that he was unhappy with the government for not taking action against DMK MLA N Maalairaja for his unruly behavior.Mr N Malairaja had allegedly assaulted the Dalit Vice-Chancellor during the university’s first convocation after he was denied a seat on the dias. Mr. Malairaja, who was also a Syndicate Member of the University, however, denied having assaulted the Vice Chancellor and the Physical Education Director who came to his rescue. The incident took place prior to an hour before the arrival of Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin for the convocation. Ms Jayalalithaa had been demanding action against the MLA, alleging he had engineered the attack on the Vice Chancellor ever since the VC was attacked.
