Indian doctor donates his property
An Alumni of Madras University donated half of his assets amounting to Rs.18 crore before he helped his terminally ill wife commit suicide and hanged himself one month later. It was found that the 68 year old Dr. Rajasekhar Sham had passed out of Stanley Medical College in 1964 and more interestingly was involved in a law suit to which he pleaded guilty of manslaughter for helping his wife Lucila die by slashing her wrists. G Thiruvasagam, Madras University Vice-Chancellor, said that he was not aware of the doctor. Sham was a practicing radiologist in New York. The couple had planned to die together and went about it in a very methodical manner, say newspaper reports published in 2008 in US. Their lawyer was informed of their plans. Lucila and Sham, as their lawyer James O’Rourke put it, were “too much in love with each other”. In a statement to authorities, Dr. Sham admitted to entering into a suicide pact with his wife who was suffering from cancer. He said his wife was unable to inflict the injuries herself and that was when he assisted her, before cutting himself up as well. But he was saved by cops and prosecuted. Sham hanged himself in his home a month later, in December.
